Wrist Pain

Wrist pain tends to show up in the middle of everything you do.
Typing, writing, cooking, lifting, driving, scrolling. The wrist is involved in an enormous range of daily tasks, which means when something is not right, it is hard to give it the rest it needs.
Most people don’t realise that wrist pain is not always about the wrist itself. How the elbow, shoulder, and neck are functioning can all influence what is happening further down the arm. Posture, workstation setup, and repetitive movement patterns are often contributing factors that go unaddressed.
At Northbridge Chiropractic, we look at what may be driving your wrist pain and work with you on a care plan that is specific to your situation.

What Can Contribute to Wrist Pain

Wrist pain can develop from a number of different sources. Some of the most common things we see include:

Repetitive strain from sustained or repeated tasks such as typing, mouse use, tool operation, or any work that loads the wrist and forearm over time.

Carpal tunnel syndrome, where the median nerve becomes compressed as it passes through the carpal tunnel in the wrist, causing pain, tingling, or numbness in the hand and fingers.

Tendinopathy or tendinitis, involving irritation of the tendons that run through the wrist, often from overuse or a sudden increase in activity.

Sprains and ligament injuries from falls, impacts, or sudden awkward movements that overload the wrist joint.

De Quervain’s tenosynovitis, which affects the tendons on the thumb side of the wrist and is commonly seen in new parents and people who perform repetitive gripping or pinching movements.

Ganglion cysts, which are fluid-filled lumps that can develop around the wrist joint and sometimes cause localised discomfort.

Referred symptoms from the neck or upper spine, where nerve irritation travels down the arm and is felt at the wrist or hand.

Arthritis and other joint conditions that affect the small joints of the wrist over time.

AI generated Illustrated diagram showing eight common causes of wrist pain including repetitive strain from sustained or repeated tasks, carpal tunnel syndrome, tendinopathy or tendinitis, sprains and ligament injuries, De Quervain's tenosynovitis, ganglion cysts, referred symptoms from the neck or upper spine, and arthritis and other joint conditions.

Why We Look Beyond the Wrist

The wrist does not function in isolation. The nerves that supply the wrist and hand originate in the cervical spine. The muscles that control wrist movement run from the forearm and are influenced by what is happening at the elbow and shoulder. Posture at the desk affects how the whole upper limb loads during activity.

This is why we assess the neck, shoulder, and elbow as part of a wrist pain examination. Addressing a contributing factor higher up the chain can make a meaningful difference to how the wrist responds over time.

We often see people who have been treating the wrist alone without improvement. In many cases, the contributing pattern is coming from somewhere else.

How We Approach Wrist Pain at Northbridge Chiropractic

We start with a thorough assessment before anything else.
We look at the wrist and hand and at the structures above it, including the forearm, elbow, shoulder, and cervical spine. We ask about how the pain started, your daily activities, your occupation, and what you have already tried.
Depending on what we find, your care may include chiropractic assessment of the wrist, hand, and upper limb joints to support movement and function, soft tissue therapy and myofascial release for the muscles and tendons of the forearm and wrist, active release therapy to address soft tissue restrictions contributing to pain and reduced mobility, dry needling to manage trigger points in the forearm and surrounding musculature, cervical spine assessment and management where nerve referral may be a contributing factor, ergonomic and workstation guidance to reduce load through the wrist during daily tasks, and targeted exercises and stretches to support wrist strength and flexibility between visits.
Ongoing care also plays a role for those with repetitive strain injuries or underlying conditions. Building strength, improving flexibility, and addressing lingering imbalances can help support long-term wrist function.

Two Things You Can Try in the Meantime

These are general suggestions that many people find helpful while managing wrist discomfort.

They are not a substitute for a proper assessment, but they are a practical starting point.

What Happens at Your Appointment

If this is your first visit to Northbridge Chiropractic, here is what to expect:

Your first appointment is longer than a standard visit.

We take time to understand your history, how the wrist pain started, and what you have already tried.

We ask about your occupation, your daily activities, and any previous injuries to the wrist, elbow, shoulder, or neck.

We then carry out a physical assessment of the wrist and surrounding structures, including the upper limb and cervical spine where relevant.

We will walk you through what we find and explain what may be contributing to your discomfort.

If we feel chiropractic care may be appropriate for your situation, we will outline what a care plan could look like and give you a realistic sense of what to expect over time.

There is no pressure. You are welcome to ask as many questions as you like before making any decisions.
Follow-up appointments are more focused. As we get to know how your body responds, we adjust the approach accordingly.

Would you like to understand what may be contributing to your wrist pain?

If wrist discomfort has been affecting your work, your daily activities, or your ability to do the things you enjoy, we would be happy to help.
