We’ve been trained to think pain is the problem.

“It hurts.”

“It gets in the way.”

“We want it gone. Fast.”

So we pop a pill. Stretch it out. Ice it. Google a few quick fixes, hoping something sticks.

But here’s the part most people never realise:

Pain isn’t the problem.

Pain is the message.

Pain Is Your Body’s Check Engine Light

Your body isn’t trying to punish you.

It’s trying to protect you.

When you feel pain, it’s your body’s way of saying:

“Hey, something’s off. Can you please pay attention?”

Pain is a built-in alert system.

Like the check engine light on your car, it’s not the engine’s fault, it’s a signal that something deeper needs to be checked. And just like that dashboard light, we often cover it up instead of investigating what’s really going on.

You can silence the signal for a while. But the issue doesn’t disappear.

It waits.

At the Clinic, We Don’t Chase Symptoms, We Ask Why

When someone comes into the clinic with back pain, I rarely start by asking where it hurts.

I askwhy it’s there.

That’s where the real work starts.

The pain in your back might have nothing to do with your back at all.

It could be:

  • The way you sit all day
  • The way you breathe under stress
  • A pattern from an old injury
  • The way your body has adapted to protect itself
  • Or the result of your nervous system being on high alert for too long

Your body isn’t broken, it’s compensating.

The Real Danger Is Not the Pain, It’s Normalising It

The real danger isn’t the pain itself. It’s ignoring it until it becomes normal.

You stop noticing the stiffness.

You adjust your chair again.

You stretch just to function.

You tell yourself you’re “just getting older.”

Then one day, your body says: enough.

And that’s when most people show up, which is completely okay.

Because that’s where we start.

But what if you didn’t wait until breaking point?

Pain isn’t the enemy. It’s feedback.

It’s your body’s most honest language.

And when you start to listen early, you can actually do something about it before it turns into something bigger.

The goal isn’t to chase symptoms.

It’s to understand what they’re trying to tell you.

When you treat the cause, the message stops repeating.

If you’ve been putting up with pain because you think it’s “just part of getting older” or because you’re too busy to deal with it, let me remind you, you can’t perform at your best if your body’s running in survival mode.

Pain is just your body tapping you on the shoulder.

Listen before it has to start shouting.

I’d love to hear from you:
