Dry Needling Therapy

Treat Your Sore & Stiff Muscles with Dry Needling Therapy

Over time, your muscles can become tangled and tightened due to injury or repetitive stress, creating what is known as trigger points. As the muscle fibres tighten, circulation will decrease, toxins will build up, and you will begin to experience muscle pain. As well as this, trigger points can also lead to decreased muscle flexibility and strength.

At Northbridge Chiropractic, we use dry needling to provide relief from tight, stiff and painful muscles. Often used for patients with sports injuries, dry needling involves inserting thin needles into trigger points to effectively treat the target area.

Dry needling provides relief by relaxing the body’s tissue and altering its circulation in a way that decreases tension and restores normal function.

What Is Dry Needling and How Exactly Does it Work?

Dry needling is a fast and effective form of soft tissue treatment that is based on western medical principles. While it uses similar needles to acupuncture, the two processes are actually quite different.

Dry needling targets trigger points in your muscles to remove pain, improve mobility, and increase your wellbeing overall. At the beginning of a session, our specialist doctors will determine the location of any trigger points and recommend if dry needling is right for you.

If dry needling is right for you, the process begins by gently inserting one needle into each trigger point. We carefully manipulate the needle and remove it from the muscle a few minutes later. This may be repeated several times and used in conjunction with other chiropractic care to promote recovery, relaxation and pain relief.

Are There Any Dry Needling Dangers, Side Effects or Pain to Consider?

Dry needling is considered by most people to be quite a relaxing process. The needles used are incredibly thin, 100% sterile, and typically painless upon insertion. When a needle is manipulated inside a trigger point muscle, you may experience a slight ache or twitch, but this is simply a sign that the process is working. Dry needle therapy very rarely involves any bleeding or bruising, and patients will be able to return to their daily activities after a session.

In terms of dry needling dangers and side effects, there has been substantial evidence-based research to support the safety and effectiveness of dry needle therapy. The friendly doctors at Northbridge Chiropractic are highly trained in dry needling and are happy to walk you through the process.

Dry Needling vs Acupuncture – What’s the Difference?

Dry needling takes advantage of neural pathways and chemical releases to increase circulation, release endorphins, relieve pain, improve mobility and enhance muscle healing. The process directly targets the trigger points in your muscles as identified by our chiropractors, and the process is based on current medical science.

Acupuncture is more concerned with energy flow around your body and is based on Traditional Chinese Medicine. Rather than targeting trigger points, the needles are inserted at set points around the body, better known as meridian points.

Frequently Ask Questions

Chiropractic care in Perth | simple answers to common questions

1. What does a chiropractor do?

  • A chiropractor looks at how your body moves and functions as a whole. This includes your posture, joints, muscles, and nervous system. At Northbridge Chiropractic, we focus on understanding what may be contributing to your symptoms, not just where it hurts.

2. Can chiropractic help with back or neck pain?

  • Many people visit for back discomfort, neck tension, headaches, or stiffness. Chiropractic care may help support how your body moves and manages daily load, which can play a role in how these issues show up. A proper assessment helps guide what’s appropriate for you.

3. Why does my pain keep coming back?

  • Pain often isn’t the starting point. Things like posture, work habits, stress, and movement patterns build up over time. If those don’t change, the body can return to the same pattern. That’s why we focus on long-term changes, not just short-term relief.

4. What happens at your first chiropractic appointment?

Your first visit is about understanding your situation.

We’ll go through:

  • Your history
  • How your body is moving
  • What may be contributing

We then explain what we’re seeing and what your options are.

5. Do I need ongoing chiropractic care?

  • Care is always your choice. Some people come in for short-term support. Others choose ongoing care to stay consistent and support their long-term health. We guide you, but you decide what fits your life.

6. Is chiropractic care safe?

  • Chiropractic care is widely used to support movement and function. We take the time to assess properly and tailor care to the individual. If something isn’t suitable, we’ll let you know.

7. Do you need X-rays?

  • Not always. We only consider imaging if it’s clinically appropriate and helps guide care. In many cases, a thorough assessment is enough.

8. I already stretch and exercise, why am I still tight?

  • Tightness isn’t always about needing more stretching. It can be your body responding to how you move, sit, or manage stress. If the underlying pattern stays the same, the tightness often returns.

9. Can I keep working or exercising?

  • In most cases, yes. We aim to keep you moving while adjusting how much load your body is handling.

10. How do I book a chiropractor in Perth?

  • You can book online at a time that suits you. If you’re not sure where to start, we’re happy to guide you through the process.
