Neck Pain

One of those things that creeps up gradually.

A stiff neck after a long day at the desk. Tension that builds through the week. A dull ache that never quite goes away. Most people don’t realise how much their posture, screen time, and stress levels are affecting their neck until the discomfort becomes hard to ignore.

At Northbridge Chiropractic, we look at what may be contributing to your neck pain, not just where it hurts. Your neck is part of a connected system, and how the rest of your spine and body functions can play a bigger role than most people expect

What Can Contribute to Neck Pain

Neck pain can come from a number of different sources. Some of the most common things we see include:

➜ Prolonged desk or screen work, particularly when posture has shifted over time.

➜ Driving long distances with tension held through the shoulders and neck.

➜ A single incident such as a sudden awkward movement, a fall, or a whiplash-type injury.

➜ Disc changes in the cervical spine, including disc bulges or degenerative disc disease.

➜ A pinched nerve in the neck, which can sometimes refer pain into the arm, shoulder, or hand.

➜ Muscle tension that builds from stress and is held in the neck and upper back.

➜ Poor sleep position or an unsupportive pillow that strains the neck overnight.

The Connection Between Neck Pain and Headaches

Many people don’t realise their headaches may be connected to what is happening in their neck.

The upper part of the neck, known as the cervical spine, sits close to pain-sensitive structures that can refer discomfort into the head. When there is tension, restriction, or dysfunction in the cervical joints, muscles, or ligaments, headaches are a common result.

We often see this pattern in people who spend long hours at a desk or computer. The head gradually drifts forward, the neck muscles work harder to hold it up, and over time this creates tension that can trigger headaches at the base of the skull, behind the eyes, or across the temples.

If you experience recurring headaches alongside neck stiffness or tension, it is worth having a thorough assessment to understand what may be contributing.

Neck Stretches That May Help

Neck stretches, when performed correctly and safely, are an excellent way to reduce tension in the neck region and the pain it causes. Some of the neck pain relief stretches our qualified and experienced health practitioners may recommend include:

➜ Behind the back neck stretch

➜ Seated clasping neck stretch

➜ Forwards and backwards tilt

➜ Grounded tipover tuck

➜ Seated heart opener

➜ Seated neck release

➜ Shoulder roll

Stretches like these can be performed at home and some you can even do at work while sitting at your desk. Taking the time to stretch your neck a few times can make a big difference to your day and your overall quality of life; however, stretching is no substitute for effective chiro and muscle therapy treatments delivered by a qualified practitioner.

Neck Pain And Headaches

How We Approach Neck Pain at Northbridge Chiropractic

Every person we see comes in with a different picture. Before we do anything, we take time to understand your history, your daily routine, and what you have already tried.

We assess how your cervical spine is moving, where there may be restrictions or areas of tension, and how your posture and overall spinal health may be playing a role.

Depending on what we find, your care may include chiropractic spinal adjustments to support movement and function in the cervical spine, dry needling to address trigger points and muscle tension, trigger point therapy and myofascial release for the neck and shoulder region, postural advice and guidance on workstation setup, and specific neck stretches tailored to your situation.

Your body adapts to what you do daily. Alongside hands-on care, we often discuss small practical changes that can support your progress between visits.

 What Happens at Your Appointment

If this is your first visit, here is a straightforward picture of what to expect.

Your first appointment is longer than a standard visit. We take time to understand your history, what you are currently experiencing, and how long it has been going on. We will ask about your daily routine, your work setup, your stress levels, and your sleep. These things often contribute more than people realise.

We then carry out a physical assessment to look at how your neck and spine are moving and where there may be tension or restriction.

We will walk you through what we find and explain what may be contributing to your discomfort. If we feel chiropractic care may be appropriate for your situation, we will outline what a care plan could look like and give you a realistic picture of what to expect.

There is no pressure. You are welcome to ask as many questions as you like before making any decisions.

Follow-up appointments are more focused. As we get to know how your body responds, we adjust the approach accordingly.
