Why Does My Back Feel Worse in the Morning?

Waking up stiff doesn’t always mean something is wrong.
Have you ever climbed out of bed and wondered why your back feels tighter than it did the night before?
You’re not alone.
Morning stiffness is something many people experience, and while it’s often associated with aging, there are several reasons why it can happen.
In many cases, it’s simply the way your body responds after several hours of being still.
Your spine is working while you sleep
Although you’re resting, your body is still busy overnight.
One important process involves the discs between the bones of your spine.
During the day, these discs are under constant load from sitting, standing and moving. Overnight, when that load is reduced, they naturally absorb fluid again. This is a normal part of how the spine supports itself.
Because of this, your spine can feel a little different when you first wake up. Some people notice a sense of stiffness that gradually eases as they start moving.
Your joints and muscles have been still for hours
Movement helps keep your joints and muscles working comfortably.
After spending several hours in one position, it’s common for muscles to feel tighter and joints to feel less mobile than they do later in the day.
As you begin walking, stretching or simply going about your morning routine, many people notice that their body starts to loosen up.
Our bodies are designed to move, and gentle movement often helps them feel more comfortable after a night’s rest.
What can make morning stiffness more noticeable?
Morning stiffness isn’t caused by one thing alone.
Several factors may contribute, including:
- spending long hours sitting the previous day
- sleeping in one position for much of the night
- a pillow or mattress that doesn’t adequately support your preferred sleeping position
- reduced movement during the day
- age-related changes that naturally occur in the spine and joints
Every person is different, which is why understanding the bigger picture is important.
Two simple habits to try
While these suggestions won’t suit everyone, many people find that gentle movement helps them ease into the day.
- Move before you move quickly
Before jumping out of bed, spend a minute or two gently waking your body up.
Simple movements such as bringing one knee towards your chest, slowly rotating your knees from side to side, or gently stretching your legs may help you feel more comfortable before standing.
If any movement increases your pain, stop and seek advice from a qualified health professional.
- Roll onto your side before getting up
Rather than sitting straight up from your back, try rolling onto your side first and using your arms to help you push yourself into sitting.
This approach may reduce the amount of strain placed on your lower back as you get out of bed.
When is it worth getting checked?
Occasional morning stiffness is common.
However, if your stiffness:
- lasts longer than 30 to 45 minutes most mornings
- is becoming more frequent or more intense
- limits your movement or daily activities
- is accompanied by other concerning symptoms
It’s worth discussing your symptoms with an appropriate healthcare professional to better understand what may be contributing.
The Northbridge Chiropractic Perspective
At Northbridge Chiropractic, we don’t just look at where you feel stiff.
We look at how your body moves throughout the day, how it responds to load, how stress may be influencing muscle tension, and whether there are movement patterns that could be contributing to how you feel in the morning.
Morning stiffness is often your body’s way of telling you it would benefit from a closer look—not necessarily that something serious is wrong, but that it’s worth understanding why the pattern is happening.
If you’re regularly waking up feeling stiff or sore, a personalised assessment can help identify factors that may be contributing and discuss options that are appropriate for you.
