Why Your Headaches Might Be Coming from Your Neck

Neck pain is rarely just about the neck. The cervical spine houses nerve roots that branch out in multiple directions, and when something is not moving or sitting quite right in that area, it can affect much more than just the local tissue. Most people don’t realise how interconnected the neck, nerves, and upper body really are until something starts to show up somewhere unexpected.
If you get regular headaches and pain relief only takes the edge off for a while before they come back, your neck might be worth looking at.
There’s a specific type of headache called a cervicogenic headache. Cervicogenic means it originates in the cervical spine, which is the neck. The pain is felt in the head, but the source is elsewhere.
Here’s why it happens.
The nerves in the upper neck refer pain to the head. When there’s tension, restriction, or irritation in the upper cervical joints or the muscles that attach there, that signal can travel upward and produce a headache. It often starts at the base of the skull and moves forward, sometimes affecting one side of the head more than the other.
People with cervicogenic headaches often notice they worsen after long periods at a desk, after driving, or when they’ve been under significant stress. They may also notice stiffness or reduced movement in the neck alongside the headache.
This type of headache tends not to respond as well to medication alone, because the medication addresses the pain signal but not the source.
What may help is addressing the neck directly. Movement, manual therapy, and looking at the postural patterns that are loading the upper cervical spine.
A simple thing to notice: does your headache tend to come on after extended screen time or sitting? Does pressing on the muscles at the base of your skull reproduce or worsen the head pain? Does moving your neck in certain directions affect the headache?
If any of these are familiar, your neck is worth assessing properly.
